Stranger Thing season 3 released with great critical acclaim and was a big success. The season 4 has not been confirmed yet but it is a forgone conclusion that it will be announced soon by Netflix. Fans are already speculating Stranger Things season 4 theories about what might happen to all of their favorite characters. From Joyce Byers moving away from Hawkins to Eleven losing her powers, Season 3 was packed with many such twists and turns.
Stranger Things Season 4 Theories
Stranger Things 3 left a lot of unanswered questions. Is Hopper really dead? Who is the American in Russian jail? Are Eleven’s powers gone forever? Today we are gonna look at some of the interesting theories that might happen in Season 4. Let the conspiracy theories commence!
1. Hopper Is Trapped in the Upside Down
Hopper died in Stranger Things 3 after the destruction of the Russians’ energy machine in Starcourt. However, it is possible that he was transported somewhere else. The final episode cut to black for a full six seconds after Joyce turned the keys, leaving plenty of room for interpretation about what happened in between the time she closed her eyes and when the machine actually exploded. Our theory is that Hopper scurried down that ladder and made it into the Upside Down before the machine blew up.
David Harbour implied that Hopper is still alive in an interview after Stranger Things 3 premiered. While speaking with /Film’s Chris Evangelista, Harbour reportedly said Hopper is “most likely” still alive. Also the actor who plays Hopper, David Harbour, is apparently contracted to appear in Season 4.
2. Murray Bauman is already on the case.
In Season 3 episode 6, Hopper gave the number of Murray Bauman. Well, it seems that you can call Murray at (618) 625-8313. When you call this number, there is an answering machine message. In the recording, the conspiracy theorist says that he has news for Joyce about Hopper.
“If this is Joyce — Joyce, thank you for calling,” he says. “I have been trying to reach you. I have an update. It’s about, well, it’s probably best if we speak in person. It’s not good or bad, but it’s something …”

One of the fans even cracked the code as he split the decimal coordinates of the number into 2 groups of 5 digits which then translates in degrees, minutes and seconds to coordinates in Russia (61°51’43.2″N 58°18’46.8″E). Is this a coincidence? I think not.
3. Hopper Is the American in the Russian Prison
If Cheif Hopper isn’t in the Upside Down, then he might be in Russia. He could be “the American” currently trapped in a Russian prison, being tortured for information. In a recent interview, Harbour said that his character was most probably trapped in the Russian jail which was shown in the Season 3 post-credits sequence. Speaking to Slash Film, Harbour said,
“I straight-up asked: Is that Hopper behind the door? According to Harbour, that’s the most likely scenario. Throughout the season, the main Russian baddie refers to Hopper as ‘the American,’ and having another Russian refer to the mysterious prisoner in the same way was the big giveaway.”
In the season finale, Hopper might’ve leapt right through the open gate before it closed and could’ve travelled through the Upside Down and emerged in Kamchatka, Russia where he’s been imprisoned ever since.
4. Dr. Brenner is in the Russian jail.
What if “the American” is actually another character presumed to be dead? Could he be Dr. Brenner, Eleven’s scientist father who was presumed dead at the end of Season 1?
5. Everyone will leave Hawkins.
The showrunners, Ross and Matt Duffer said in 2017 interview to Vulture, “We’re thinking it will be a four-season thing and then out.” As for whether or not the show could continue beyond Season 4, Matt said, “I don’t know if we can justify something bad happening to them once a year,” with Ross adding, “They’re going to have to get the fuck out of this town!”
It’s possible that our favorite characters will leave Hawkins, Indiana, in Stranger Things 4. After all, Joyce left town at the end of Season 3 with her kids and Eleven.

The Duffer brothers seemed to confirm this in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Matt explained, “I think the biggest thing that’s going to happen is it’s going to open up a little bit, not necessarily in terms of scale, in terms of special effects, but open up in terms of allowing plotlines into areas outside of Hawkins.” Which could mean that the showrunners are planning to explore Russia or elsewhere in the United States. In Season 2 they even tried a new story in chapter seven titled as The Lost Sister.
6. Eleven will get her powers back.
If anything is confirmed, it’s that Eleven will save the world again in Season 4. At the end of Season 3, Eleven lost her powers and couldn’t even move a small object with her mind. After battling the Mind Flayer twice, it seemed that she’d exhausted all of her powers.
In Season 4, Eleven will most likely rediscover her powers or struggles to live without them. She may even get some new powers which she is not aware of. One thing is for sure that Eleven will be the center of Season 4.
7. The Russians Are Trying to Build a Demogorgon Army
This is quite obvious as Russians aren’t still done with Hawkins just yet. In Season 3 we saw that they’ve captured their own Demogorgon. Then they feed a prisoner to the Demogorgon to probably test his powers. It is most likely that they are trying to build a Demogorgon army by some scientific experiment.
8. Hopper’s disappearance is part of a bigger plan.
TVLine is speculating that Hopper’s disappearance was planned and that he did so to keep his loved ones safe. TVLine wrote in an article, “Hopper’s vanishing act is part of some plan that he and Owens concocted on the sly so that they could ensure that the Russians’ operation overseas is shut down without endangering El and Joyce.”
The publication continued, “If the Russkies believed that Hop was a goner, they’d have no reason to go after his crush or his daughter to discourage his attempts to thwart them.” However, Hopper’s disappearance didn’t look all that planned when Joyce stopped the Russians’ machine. Though, it’s still possible.
9. The Season 4 timeline will coincide with the Chernobyl disaster.
“Season 1: Winter 1983 (Christmas) Season 2: Fall 1984 (Halloween) Season 3: Summer 1985 (Independence Day) Season 4: should be Spring 1986 (Easter and probably goes into spring break)
Post credit scene was in Russia. Chernobyl happened in Spring 1986. How Doctor Owens said that they use something familiar to convince the public to not look any further into the strange happenings. So did a nuclear reactor explode or did el have the greatest battle of her life?”
One theory even suggests that Chernobyl disaster could end up being caused by a battle involving Eleven. Perhaps the nuclear disaster will be used as a cover-up for a big showdown that takes place in Russia in Season 4.
These were some of the wildest Stranger Things Season 4 theories. Sadly we are just going to have to wait for Netflix to give us a release date for Stranger Things 4 so we can find out whether any of these theories is true. Let the wait begin!
